It is the leading ladies in Andy Young’s training camp who have dominated the spotlight, but new recruit Sol Sweeney is threatening to steal some of their thunder.

The 18-year-old from Perth demonstrated his stamina in winning the Scottish Universities Championship on a nine kilometre and is now looking to sharpen up in today’s Scottish Short Course Cross Country Championships.

“He raced the 4K relays a few weeks ago and ran one of the fastest legs then when he’s still only 18, so that was a good sign that the speed was there, but because his trial at Liverpool is 6.7K, we wanted to try something a bit longer at the weekend
