For Moray Low, the challenge has grown with every match in this autumn international series.

The opening match against Fiji was the Glasgow Warriors tighthead prop’s first Test start. He performed magnificently, earning the man of the match award.

Last weekend he found himself up against one of the world’s best teams. The Wallabies
having placed a new emphasis on the department in which he principally earns his corn, the scrummage, it was a much tougher afternoon and he had to be replaced as fresh blood was infused into a phenomenaldefensive effort.

This week, however, is close to the ultimate challenge for any prop forward as he comes up against the country that has built its rugby tradition on scrummaging.

Argentina may have made three of their six overall changes in the front five of the pack following last weekend’s heavy
defeat to Wales, but those coming in play for the big power-house clubs of European rugby.

“We did an analysis this week on the Pumas’ scrummage. It’s another step up and a new challenge for the whole forward pack,” said Low. “They’re known for the set-piece whoever is playing but we want to put a marker down ourselves and show that we can provide a good platform from the scrummage. I think it’s the same if you dominate the scrum then you go a long way towards winning the game. If we can isolate the set-piece this week, a lot of their key players are in the pack so if we can take them out it will help us a long way.”

What will help in that regard is Scotland’s determination to look after what possession they gain rather better than against the Australians. “One thing we want to do this week is to move the ball out if the weather is better. We want to get ball in hand to show we can attack as well as defend,” said Low.

Not that there has been any lack of satisfaction from the way last week’s victory was achieved.

“You want to get hands on the ball, but defence gives me as much enjoyment, it’s just as good a feeling making a big hit as it is a line break and defence does win games, as we proved on Saturday,” Low pointed out. “We showed plenty of pride in our defence on Saturday and we’d like to have more pride in our attack this week.”
