Scotland have dropped out of the top 10 rugby nations in the world following Saturday's Calcutta Cup defeat to England.

Vern Cotter's side began the Six Nations in ninth spot in the global rankings but have quickly fallen two places on the back of their demoralising 15-9 loss at BT Murrayfield.

In the system used by governing body World Rugby, Japan - formerly under the charge of victorious new England coach Eddie Jones - and Fiji were able to leapfrog the Scots into ninth and 10th, respectively, despite not playing at the weekend.

Greig Laidlaw and his team plunged to their lowest-ever placing of 12th ahead of kick-off to their World Cup campaign in the autumn but ended the tournament in ninth after qualifying for their gut-wrenching quarter-final clash with Australia.

However, the positivity of their displays south of the border in September and October were washed away by Saturday's defeat and the latest rankings are another indication of the country's lowly standing in the game.

England's success allowed them to leapfrog France into seventh place, whilst Wales and Ireland stay fourth and sixth, respectively, following their 16-16 draw in Dublin. Italy sit one place below Scotland in 12th, but are more than four ranking points adrift.
