Scotland’s rugby players are aiming to match one of the nation’s most famous sporting achievements this weekend by beating an England side that is ‘the best in the world.’

More than half a century after the 1967 victory over Alf Ramsey’s World Cup winners at Wembley, there was recognition yesterday that a Scottish team will once again face an England team that is the best in the world and after winning the Auld Alliance Trophy last time out against France the home team know they need to be even when the Auld Enemy turn up at Murrayfield

“It’s a massive game, especially for Scotland and we’re playing a side that, with Eddie Jones as coach and all the players they’ve got to call on, I think is the best team in the world just now,” said Scotland prop Gordon Reid.

The 30-year-old plays in the English Premiership with London Irish, regularly confronting the men he will be up against this weekend and he believes Scotland can draw upon the experience of facing the world’s official world no.1 team the All Blacks in November when trying to get the mindset right, adding: “That was also a massive game but we just need to step up and not play the occasion... forget about how big a game it is and go in there with clear heads,” said Reid
