All change for Richie Gray as he grows up and develops ambition

Just over a year has gone by since an English journalist pitched up for a pre-match round of interviews at Murrayfield and promptly demonstrated his in-depth knowledge of Scottish rugby by mistaking Richie Vernon for Richie Gray.

Cue tittering in the local ranks at his embarrassment of Richies, but it is not an error the poor fellow is likely to repeat.

And not just because Gray cuts such an instantly recognisable figure with his 6ft 10in frame and a personal grooming regime that makes Boris Johnson look like a hairdresser’s model. Rather because the lock forward has spent the past year imprinting himself on the consciousness of the sport far beyond the bounds of Scotland. Gray had a sensational Six Nations followed by an impressive World Cup. It ended prematurely, but it confirmed his status as just about the hottest property in the European game.
