Hooker Hayden Wisnewski scored two tries as Ayr extended their lead at the top of the RBS Premiership in the last fixtures before Christmas yesterday.
Only two matches survived in the top flight after heavy rain around the country. The encounter between Dundee HSFP and Heriot's was called off early yesterday morning, while Melrose v Edinburgh Accies and Gala v Aberdeen Grammar were postponed after lunch.
Ayr's match at Stirling County was on though and both teams worked really hard in tough conditions at Bridgehaugh.
Ayr led 12-10 at the break with their points in the first 40 minutes coming through tries by second-row Nick Campbell and Wisnewski and a conversion by young stand-off Finn Russell.
The County points in that spell had come from two tries from full-back Ben Addison to keep them in the game.
After the interval the match was still nip and tuck, Ayr scoring another try from Wisnewski and another conversion by Russell and County getting a penalty from the boot of replacement Brian Archibald.
That meant Ayr won 19-13 and now have a five point lead over second- placed Gala. The defeat leaves County eighth although they did manage to pick up a losing bonus point.
Currie and Boroughmuir battled out a 12-12 draw at Malleny Park.
The visitors started strongly and they grabbed the game's first try after just four minutes through second-row Greig Scott.
Currie got points on the board in the 23rd minute when a lovely cross field kick by stand-off Gregor Hunter set up a try for winger Dougie Fife which was converted.
Eight minutes before the interval Boroughmuir got back in front when some great defence in Currie's half saw the ball go loose and the Meggetland men took full advantage.
Eventually the ball was shipped left with Scott going over for his second try of the day to give them a 12-7 lead at the break.
Scott's eventful afternoon continued in the 45th minute when he was yellow carded for Boroughmuir.
They held out well while he was off, but in the 61st minute Fife went in at the corner for his second try and with the conversion attempt unsuccessful the sides were tied 12-12, and that was how it finished.
The result leaves Currie in third place, but they are 12 points behind Gala in second, while Boroughmuir are still bottom but will take heart from this dogged showing.
