Glasgow Hawks secured a crucial win at Edinburgh Accies in the BT Premiership yesterday, leaving the latter struggling at the bottom of the table.

Neil Herron showed good pace to score Hawks' first try and George Horne added a conversion and two penalties as they led 13-7 at the interval. Accies' try came from Alex Glashan with Callum Ramm converting while there were three yellow cards - two for Accies and one for Hawks - in the first 40 minutes.

After the break the Hawks pack took control with the front-row scrummaging well and causing all sorts of problems.

As a result they scored a penalty try and an interception one from Horne to win 27-7 and move up the table to seventh.

Accies huffed and puffed, but some of their handling and discipline on the day was poor and they are now five points adrift in 10th place with just two matches remaining.

Melrose edged out leaders Heriot's in a close fought encounter at Goldenacre.

With Ayr's trip to Currie cancelled due to a frozen pitch it means Melrose are now second in the table.

They took an early lead when Graeme Dodds scored an unconverted try before a Graham Wilson penalty got the hosts on the scoreboard.

Two more penalties came from Wilson before the break, but Richard Mill kicked two of his own for Melrose and they led 11-9 at the interval.

Heriot's had two penalty misses before a Gregor McNeish drop goal put them 12-11 up. But Mill kicked a drop goal of his own as Melrose came out on top 14-12.

Hawick won 22-15 at Stirling County. John Coutts, Ross Graham and Wullie Blacklock scored the tries for Hawick with Neil Renwick kicking seven points.

County's tries in defeat came from Ruairidh Leishman and Alex Black.

The result leaves Hawick in fifth place, but still nine points behind the play-off spots.

At Meggetland, Boroughmuir and Gala were tied 0-0 at half time before the Borderers secured a 5-3 win.

The low-scoring victory leaves Gala pretty certain to secure fourth place.
