Glasgow Warriors have moved quickly to secure the services of their versatile fly-half/centre Peter Horne after his impressive showing in their Guinness PRO12 season-opening victory over Leinster at Scotstoun last Saturday.

The 24-year-old Fifer, who scored the opening try in the Warriors' 22-20 win against the reigning PRO12 champions, has put his name to a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2017.

Horne has been with Glasgow since 2009 and has collected five international caps since he made his international debut against Samoa in South Africa last year. He subsequently missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, but Warriors coach Gregor Townsend said he had no reservations about keeping him at the club. "It's fantastic news that Peter is staying at Scotstoun for another few years," said Townsend. "This will give everyone at the club a big boost so early in the new season. He works really hard at his game and is improving all the time."

Horne himself said: "The Warriors are going in the right direction, as we've shown over the last couple of years. It's nice to feel wanted and it's great the club have put faith in me and it's the perfect place for me to develop. We've got a fantastic squad - they're my best friends. It's a brilliant place to be and for me it was a no brainer to sign this deal until 2017."

It has also been confirmed that former Dalziel and Glasgow Hawks prop Gary Strain has signed a one-month training contract with the Warriors. An under-20 internationalist, Strain spent last season with Newcastle Falcons and previously played in France.
