It all adds up in the end as Scots prepare to play numbers game

On paper, it looks like a particularly worrying cardiogram, although long-suffering supporters of the Scotland rugby team might not think it so unusual that the chart that measures their side's world ranking status over the past decade should bear similarity to the output of a dodgy ticker.

After all, their own pulse rates have surged and slumped, peaked and plummeted, during a rollercoaster era in which Scotland's stock has risen sharply after some notable wins over southern hemisphere sides and fallen just as dramatically after abject losses in the RBS Six Nations championship.
