The future of the club that spawned more Scotland players than any other over the past 15 years has been plunged into doubt.

Glasgow Hawks have been relegated from the top flight of the Premiership for the first time since they were created in 1997 and speculation was mounting last night that in the wake of their 31-24 home defeat by Edinburgh Accies and the looming departure of head coach Peter Wright, the club could fold with resources being diverted into their associate teams, Glasgow Accies and GHK.

They had been set up to feed a regular supply of players to the pro-teams and beyond but that role will be nullified by operating in a lower grade of rugby.

Wright lamented: "That game probably summed up our season – we were the better side for the bulk of the contest, but didn't take our chances as well as the opposition did.

"Congratulations to Accies. We probably got what we deserved in the campaign. It is no consolation, but it was a fantastic game to watch and I was proud of the way our guys stuck in and battled away."

Elsewhere, Melrose outpowered Aberdeen Grammar43-34 to get within a whisker of retaining their Premiership crown.

Chief chasers Dundee HSFP came out on top 43-36 against Currie in an all-action tussle at Mayfield.

Gala sealed a place in the British and Irish Cup and ended Ayr's qualification quest with a 40-29 success at Millbrae. Stirling's powerful run continued as they snuffed out Boroughmuir by 31-22 at Bridgehaugh.
