Rugby round-up

Hamilton were on top form to defeat West of Scotland at Laigh Bent in the RBS West Regional Cup yesterday.

The 47-13 home win means they have won four of their five matches in Group C.

West took an early 3-0 lead before Hamilton got themselves going when a penalty try and a converted one from Craig McLeish put them 14-3 to the good. A second penalty for the visitors made it 14-6 before Stephan Dreyer for Hamilton's third try and that was followed soon after by John Selfridge's converted effort.

That was them 26-6 up and with the bonus point in the bag, three more converted tries followed. Two of these came from Selfridge to give him a hat-trick while Scott Turnbull got one too.

West's only try of the afternoon came from Mark Davis.

And at Scotstoun Cartha Queen's Park were also in the tries to defeat Dalziel 47-5.

In the Borders section Hawick YM gave it a good shot, but Selkirk managed to battle through that tie 21-14 at Mansfield Haugh.

In the RBS Caledonia Regional Cup only one tie went ahead with Falkirk defeating Dunfermline 41-17.

Stewart's Melville ended the year on a high when they defeated Watsonians in the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup at Inverleith. The 12-6 win, with all the points coming in the first 40 minutes, means that Stewart's Melville have two wins from three in Group B with matches against Heriot's and Boroughmuir to come in January.

The points for the home side came from tries by Adam Greig and Joni Hare with Seb Trotter converting while Brian Walls kicked two penalties for 'Sonians.

Elsewhere in the Edinburgh section an end-to-end battle between top flight sides Currie and Heriot's saw the latter eventually come out on top 24-21 at Malleny Park.

At Hawthornden Musselburgh were in great form to see off Lasswade 35-7 while Boroughmuir won 21-0 at Haddington.
