Charlie Hodgson scored a late try to ensure a bonus point and Saracens’ progress to the last eight of the competition, at the expense of last season’s semi-finalists who were left out in the cold after six straight defeats this season.
Within 10 minutes the home side was ahead after Edinburgh were penalised for offside, and Owen Farrell registered the first three of a 15-point personal haul.
Dougie Fife held the ball too long in the tackle and gave Farrell another scoring chance, which he took before the home side finally registered a try through Chris Ashton. Farrell’s conversion, however, came back off the post and brought his run of 26 successful kicks to an end.
Edinburgh hit back when full-back Greig Tonks booted the ball downfield and chased his kick to charge over for a try converted by Greig Laidlaw.
Although it boosted the visitors they couldn’t build on it before the break, and failed to register afterwards when Ashton, Matt Stevens then Hodgson touched down for Saracens to spark wild celebrations, before Chris Wyles added another late try to extend the victory margin.
