The kids are all right

If 19-year-old Stuart Hogg comes off the bench for Scotland against Wales today he will become the youngest Scot to appear in an international for almost 50 years.

No teenager has played for Scotland since Gregor Townsend made his debut, just over a month before his 20th birthday, against England in 1993.

In the Victorian era, when rugby was dominated by the FP clubs, teenage internationalists were relatively common. Scotland fielded four in the very first international, against England in 1871. The phenomenon is much rarer now, but there have been some notable teenage players down the years.
