Too little, too late for Else

Edinburgh Accies 23 Stewart's-Melville 13

SPARE a thought for the deposed Edinburgh Accies coach Jonny Else. One week he gets his marching orders, before his team gets the opportunity to help ensure their survival in the Premiership, writes David Kelso.

The next week, during his recuperation from three operations aimed at curing a nasty leg infection, Else's former charges rise to the occasion to stave off the challenge of neighbours Stewart's-Melville to salvage their season.

Sadly for Else, the plaudits will be diverted to old stager Bob Easson, the club's director of rugby. Despite his sudden and controversial departure, Else showed no sign of bitterness when he stated: "Although extremely disappointed with my early exit, I have loved my time coaching Accies this year - and as assistant for three seasons before that."

Easson shed no light on the move by declaring: "We took the decision to remove the coaches because we believed that it was the right time to do so. I would just like to acknowledge the mountain of work that they did for the club."

On the fact that Accies struggled to make a big impression on their lower league rivals at neutral Lasswade, he stressed: "You must remember that there was always going to be a lot of emotional and mental pressure on players who haven't won a match since November 2 last year."

The crucial moment came when breakaway forward Calum Reid ploughed over for the try that ended the brave challenge of the Inverleith side. The score came after Stew-Mel's Jon Hamblin was yellow-carded. Accies' other touchdowns came from Nyle Godsmark and Iain Berthinussen, while Alex Blair slotted a series of pinpoint kicks.
