Even its own residents will admit that there's not much to shout about in Newcastle, but the New South Wales city – located about 100 miles north of Sydney at the mouth of the Hunter River – will at least enjoy the distinction of being a genuine Test venue after Scotland and Australia meet there next Tuesday.

Well, that's what the record books will say. It is rather less clear whether Australian rugby fans consider the match between their beloved Wallabies and the Six Nations wooden spooners to be a matter of any great note. For them, the main event on the horizon is the arrival of Wales (who had a rather better Six Nations than Andy Robinson's lot) for a three-match series which kicks off a week tomorrow. Scotland, to be blunt about it, are little more than the warm-up act.
