A couple are to be married in front of thousands of members of the public on a stage on Saturday as part of the Edinburgh Festival - and the service will be broadcast to millions more on the world wide web.

Tamara Falter, of Baltimore in the US, and Jason Bainbridge, of Caithness, will be married by a humanist minister at the Festival Revue stage in Princes Street Gardens.

The broadcast will also reach Leicester Square in London where it will be shown on a 66 square metre screen.

A 40-piece orchestra will provide the music against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

The couple met while in Edinburgh last year when Mr Bainbridge was walking in Princes Street Gardens and Ms Falter asked him for directions.

They kept up their romance via the internet when she went home, and they later met up in London where their love blossomed.

The couple asked Paul Blythe, the revue director, if he would allow the ceremony to go ahead on stage and he agreed.

Mr Bainbridge, 22, a barman, said: ''I am sure it will be what it would be like standing in front of the whole school naked. We are both looking forward to it, but we are very nervous.''

Ms Falter, 24, who is an aspiring photographer, added: ''This is a way my family can see my special day. I am so excited.''

The bride's mother will be the only one to fly from America for the wedding, and Mr Bainbridge's brother, Crispin, will be the best man. Most of the groom's family will be in the audience for the marriage.

A spokesman for the revue said: ''The wedding could have potentially a larger audience than Charles and Diana's, but in reality that is not likely to happen. The revue, because of the webcam links, is one of the most accessible events of the festival.''

The revue has already beamed performances from more than 2000 live acts world-wide over the last three years.
