THE Rev. Professor Roderick Finlayson, theologian and former Moderator

of the Free Church of Scotland, has died at his home in Edinburgh at the

age of 93.

Born in Lochcarron, Wester Ross, in 1895, he fought in France during

the First World War before studying divinity at the Free Church College

in Edinburgh.

He was ordained to his first charge at Urray in the Black Isle in 1922

and was later minister of Hope Street Free Church in Glasgow before

being appointed to the Chair of Systematic Theology in the Free Church

College in 1945. He was Moderator of the General Assembly the same year.

Professor Finlayson combined his academic work with editing the Free

Church's Monthly Record, and built a world-wide reputation as an able

conservative theologian.

Noted for his searing wit, his outspokenness made him a considerable

force in the post-war Free Church.

Professor Finlayson retired from the Free Church College in 1966, but

remained in Edinburgh, writing and preaching until a breakdown in his

health six years ago. He is survived by a son and three grandchildren.
