Perhaps every cloud really does have a silver lining. It was on a miserable day in Holland in 1955 that a Dutch designer called Dick Bruna set out to entertain his one-year-old son by drawing a rabbit.
About 50 years later Miffy is an inspiration not just to generations of children but also to graphic designers and artists across the world. Bruna, who began working in his father's publishing house, was inspired by artists such as Matisse and Leger and still works every day in his studio in Utrecht at the age of 78. Miffy the Bunny, meanwhile, has become a global brand - books featuring the rabbit and his friends have been translated into 40 languages and have sold 85 million copies worldwide as part of a GBP165m-a-year industry.
If those numbers induce nightmares of Disneyesque proportions, this exhibition promises more value than mere pressure for parents to dig into theirwallets. With 100 works, it is the first attempt to assess Bruna's importance as a designer of global influence, an outing that should brighten a wet afternoon for everyone.
