COCA-COLA CUP

ENGLAND'S Coca-Cola up matches last night produced more than their share of shocks - and plenty of goals - as out went Newcastle, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to what would be regarded as lesser lights - Middlesbrough, Leicester City and Bolton.

On top of that, second division Stockport held West Ham of the Premiership to 1-1 at Upton Park.

Scotland's Derek Whyte, the former Celtic defender, put Middlesbrough ahead in the Teeside derby against New-castle at Riverside.

Craig Hignett's left wing corner was only half cleared and when Steve Vickers drilled it back into the box, Whyte turned the ball home from the edge of the six yard box.

Newcastle hit back in the final minute of the first half, Alan Shearer climbed unmarked to meet Gillespie's right wing corner and his header looped over Walsh into the top right corner.

In 61 minutes, however, Boro were back in front when Mikkel Beck nipped in front of the keeper to knock the ball home from six yards, and near the end, Fabrizio Ravanelli made sure of victory with Boro's third goal.

Elsewhere, Scot John McGinlay struck twice to give Bolton a 2-1 interval lead over Tottenham, Teddy Sheringham being the Spurs scorer. And then Gerry Taggart on the hour mark had the London side in real trouble with a third goal, and McGinlay completed his hat trick with a penalty to make it 4-1.

Nathan Blake seemed to have completed a joy night for Bolton with a fifth goal 11 minutes from time - until Scott Taylor stepped in with a sixth goal four minutes from time.

Leicester's Steve Claridge gave Manchester United a shock with a goal in 38 minutes at Filbert Street, and Emile Heskey in 77 minutes sealed Leicester's victory with a fine strike.

Goals by Steve McManaman and a double by Robbie Fowler - one from the penalty spot - saw Liverpool hit back to lead 3-1 after Ian Wright had put Arsenal ahead from the spot at Anfield.

Arsenal's woe continued in 56 minutes when Steve Bould was sent off for a second bookable offence - his first yellow card having come after only 54 seconds.

However, the Londoners still managed to hit back when Wright got his second goal from the penalty spot in 68 minutes. Patrick Berger, in 72 minutes, had the Anfield fans singing loud and clear as he clinched victory to make it 4-2.

Florin Raducioiu put West Ham ahead in their home match against Stockport before Louie Cavaco equalised just after the break. And the second division side earned their replay.

In the league at Maine Road, Manchester City were in-volved in a thriller against West Brom. Uwe Rosler and Georgiou Kinkladze put City two ahead before Paul Peschisolido pulled one back.

A Kinkladze penalty re-stored City's lead before West Brom hauled themselves back into the game with an Ian Hamilton goal.
