lThe Australia vice-captain Adam Gilchrist was fined half his match fee for dissent yesterday after a disciplinary inquiry into the second one-day international against Sri Lanka. The all-rounder Andrew Symonds also went before the inquiry but was cleared of the charge, which could have resulted in a match suspension. The ICC match referee Mike Proctor summoned the two after they both questioned the umpire Peter Manuel's decision to rule Symonds out lbw during Sunday's match.

HOCKEY
Two new synthetic pitches are ready for use at Countesswells this weekend. The new facilities at Robert Gordon's College include a water-based international-standard surface, which will be used by Aberdeen Asset Management. The facility will be christened by the Scottish squad in a match against the host club on March 20.

Todd Dutiaume struck twice as Fife Flyers homed in on the British National League title last night. The Canadian forward's goals helped beat Bracknell Bees 5-1 at Kirkcaldy and the Scots now need to beat rock-bottom Hull Stingrays in England on Saturday to secure the title.
Elsewhere, Martin Cingel fired a treble as Edinburgh Capitals claimed a 7-2 victory over the league bottom-markers Hull Stingrays.

Motor racing
Allan McNish clocked the fastest time in a three-day test in the States behind the wheel of his new Audi R8 as he prepares for this year's European Le Mans Series, as well as the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic. The 34-year-old from Dumfries, driving the car for the first time in three years after his period in Formula One, lapped the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta in Georgia in 1min 11.26sec. McNish will make his debut for Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx in the Sebring 12 Hours on March 20.
