Britain's Johanna Konta became the first British female to reach a grand slam semi-final in 33 years after she beat Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang at the Australian Open.

Konta will now face Angelique Kerber in the last four and the Briton will be the clear underdog given she is currently ranked 41 spots below the German.

Here, we look at five reasons why Konta can cause an upset and make the final.

1. Nothing to lose

Nobody expects Konta to win. The three other semi-finalists are all top 10 seeds and Kerber is world number six. Whatever happens, this has been an incredible tournament for the Briton - she can swing free.

2. Kerber under pressure

Kerber knows she is huge favourite but she also knows this is a massive opportunity to reach her first grand slam final. The German has made two semi-finals before and lost on both occasions. She will be desperate to avoid a third disappointment.

3. Mental and physical fatigue

Konta and Kerber both have less than a day to recover but Kerber was the more stretched in her quarter-final after a pulsating victory over Victoria Azarenka. It was also her first ever win over the Belarusian and her emotional reaction afterwards suggests she might find it difficult to reset.

4. Left-hand experience

Kerber is a powerful left-hander, eager to dictate from the baseline and win points off her forehand. Konta has already faced a similar opponent, having beaten the left-handed Ekaterina Makarova in the last 16 so she will be well warmed up.

5. Serve

Konta may struggle to dominate from the back but she can put pressure on Kerber with her serve. She has won 73 per cent of first serve points this tournament and delivered 21 aces - only Serena Williams has a better record of the players left. If Konta serves well, she has a chance.
