Early defeats for Andy Murray in Indian Wells and Miami have left the British number one searching for his best form ahead of the clay-court season.

Murray struggled to contain his frustration in an error-strewn loss to Grigor Dimitrov in the third round of the Miami Open and was then forced to deny a rift with coach Amelie Mauresmo.

Heading into a hectic summer, we look at the events on Murray's calendar over the coming weeks.

1. Monte-Carlo Masters

Murray has not played in Monte Carlo since 2013 so has no points to defend, which is good news for the Scot with Roger Federer now breathing down his neck for the world number two spot. Traditionally, the curtain-raiser to the European clay swing has been one of Murray's better tournaments on the red stuff, yielding semi-final appearances in 2009 and 2011.

2. Madrid Open

Murray is not planning to defend his title in Munich - the first clay final of his career - but will bid to retain the crown in Madrid at the start of May. Murray suddenly found his feet on clay last year and beat Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori and Rafael Nadal back to back without dropping a set to lift the trophy. With 1,000 points to defend, a bad week in the Spanish capital could be costly for his ranking.

3. Internazionali BNL d'Italia

After his title double, Murray pulled out of the Masters tournament in Rome last year because of fatigue ahead of a scheduled third-round match against David Goffin. He will hope to be feeling as good about his game when the final big event before the French Open comes around this year.

4. French Open

The year's second grand slam remains the only one at which Murray is yet to make a final, but he came as close as he has ever done last year with a five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. At that stage, he appeared to be closing the gap to the world number one, but Murray has failed to take a set off Djokovic in their last three meetings.

5. Aegon Championships

Murray will aim to become the first man ever to win five titles at Queen's Club as he builds up to Wimbledon. But all the Scot's successes at the historic tournament have come in odd-numbered years so he will have to break that pattern if he is to successfully defend the trophy for the first time.

6. Wimbledon

Murray fell victim to a Roger Federer masterclass in the semi-finals at the All England Club last year. Three years on from his greatest triumph, Murray's bid for a second Wimbledon title will kick off a gruelling two-month schedule that also includes a Davis Cup quarter-final in Serbia, the defence of his Olympic gold medal and the US Open.
