LOUIS Cayer, the renowned coach who is doubles leader and head of high performance at the Lawn Tennis Association, has welcomed the appointment of Colin Fleming as Scotland's national tennis coach and pledged to support him in whatever way he can. Cayer, who is credited with the huge improvement in Jamie Murray's game since returning to a lead coaching role some three seasons back, also worked previously with Fleming, and feels that the well-connected 30-year-old former Scotland Commonwealth Gold medalist can be a key appointment at Tennis Scotland as the governing body ramp up their efforts to build on the legacy left by the Murray family and others.

"It is so good for Scotland because first of all Colin has an amazing personality," Cayer, a former Canada Davis Cup captain, told Herald Sport. "He is so likeable - which is important because a leader without any followers isn't really a leader, right? People will like to work with him because the way he speaks is always encouraging, praising, supporting. I think it is a great concept for Tennis Scotland to have him there.

"I was talking with Jamie about that recently and we agreed that if he asks me to come up, even if I hadn't coached him, you would do it," Cayer added. "If he asks Leon [Smith, the GB Davis Cup captain] for help and asks Judy [Murray] for help, of course they will do it. I don't know anyone who wouldn't support him in one specific area.

"He is not arrogant or something like this, he is humble. He will come and say 'Judy what do you do when you work with them when they are young', or 'Louis, what do you do when you coach coaches', or Leon with high performance. We all have some specialities where we can help him better than others.

"He would do a good job without that help but he hasn't got the experience yet, although it is coming. He could of course learn from his mistakes but I think he would learn quicker by asking support from all these people who have made all these same mistakes before."

One of Fleming's first tasks as national team coach will be to cast an eye over the Aegon GB Pro Series, the annual $15,000 futures event which returns to Scotstoun, Glasgow next week.
