THE Scots are on the march at Scotstoun. Maia Lumsden was giving away more than 330 spots in the world rankings yesterday as she took on Kathinka von Deichmann, the No 6 seed from Liechtenstein in the last 16 of the GB Pro Series, or Scottish Tennis Championships, but she made a mockery of the odds stacked against her to record the biggest rankings scalp of her young senior career with a degree of comfort.
Lumsden, beaten finalist in this competition two years ago, was a promising junior player who claimed the prestigious Orange Bowl tournament in 2012 then had a spell training at the IMG academy in Florida, but a return to the University of Stirling is providing a base for some of the most convincing play as a senior. After title wins in 2017 in Sunderland and The Wirral, the small crowd who have gathered each day for this tournament, which offers free admittance to the public, were delighted as she compiled a fine 6-2, 6-3 win against an opponent ranked 189 in the world, to Lumsden’s 524. Next up, today, for the 20-year-old is Italian qualifier Camilla Rosatello, a 22-year-old from Saluzzo who is also ranked inside the world’s top 300 players, and who started the competition by taking care of the No 1 seed on the women’s side, Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, who was previously the world’s top junior player and as high as No 61 in the WTA rankings.
