ANDY Murray is safely through to the third round after one of the easiest matches of his Wimbledon career.

The No 3 seed beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 on No 1 Court in a match that was over in under an hour and a half. Murray played sublimely at times, but hardly had to break sweat to get the better of Haase, whose error-strewn performance failed to do justice to his considerable ability.

James Ward, Murray's Davis Cup team-mate, has made it two British men into the last 32. He beat Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 and will now be in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.

The No 8 women's seed, Ekaterina Makarova, has been knocked out by Magdalena Rybarikova, losing 2-6, 5-7. Alize Cornet, seeded 25th, has also gone out, being beaten in three sets by Olga Govortsova.

The three top-ten seeds in early Thursday action in the women's singles were more successful. Caroline Wozniacki, the No 5, beat Denisa Allertova in straight sets, former finalist Sabine Lisicki battled past Christina McHale in three, and Angelique Kerber won in two against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
