Alan Mackin, the Paisley-born head coach at Prestwick Tennis Club, played in the sport's top team event with Murray for Great Britain in the mid-2000s and could see his boundless talent then.
Having also worked alongside Rafael Nadal when he was emerging, though, Mackin was aware that the gifted pair had very different outlooks. The Spaniard, he says possessed an early maturity that allowed him to make improvements in his game and be receptive to the advice of others, an ability Murray may have only fully developed in more recent times.
