GREAT Britain were unable to repeat their heroics of Friday as they lost out to Belarus in their Fed Cup promotional play-off yesterday.
On Friday, Judy Murray's team overcame the Ukraine 3-0, but Belarus were just too strong, with Johanna Konta going down 6-0, 6-1 to Olga Govortsova and then Victoria Azarenka steamrolling Heather Watson 6-4 6-1 to win the tie.
Team captain Judy Murray was left disappointed after the highs of Friday.
"It just didn't happen for us," she said. "In the first match Jo just couldn't find her form but Olga Govortsova played incredibly well and made it very difficult for Jo but she was well below her best sadly for her and for us.
"Heather was up against one of the best payers in the world and I thought she got closer than the score suggested, but maybe wasn't quite as consistent as she needed to be to break down that level of player.
"It is all over for us for another year and we have 12 months to try to help the girls improve and get ready to come back and challenge for this zone again.
"One of the real plusses this year was being able to bring a doubles team with us for the first time. They have been working very hard and broken into the top 100. They won three matches here and the match they won yesterday against Ukraine was a huge win for the girls and the team, which is a big positive."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.Â
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.Â
That is invaluable.Â
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
