Andy Murray is through to the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto after a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory over Flavio Cipolla.

Buoyed by his gold medal triumph over Roger Federer at the Olympic Games the world No.4 dominated from start to finish against his Italian opponent, ranked 93 places lower in the ATP world rankings, to wrap up the win in one hour and 21 minutes.

The 25-year-old Scot will now meet 16th seed and local hero Milos Raonic for a place in the quarter-finals.

Cipolla beat Estonian Jurgen Zopp in the first round, but looked second best throughout against Murray, who was given a bye in the early round.

Murray fired three aces and seven winners as Cipolla struggled to keep pace with the Scot, who found great success coming forward as well as from the back of the court.

The trainer was required with Murray having knee trouble and Cipolla briefly took advantage by forcing the Olympic champion to charge around the court.

Murray was unable to maintain the intensity which he could in the first and Cipolla fared better although the Scot's break in the fifth game proved decisive as he held on to register the win.

Third seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga became the highest seeded player to be eliminated, beaten 6-4, 7-6 to compatriot Jeremy Chardy.

Juan Martin Del Potro admitted fatigue got the better of him during a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Czech Radek Stepanek.

Del Potro, who was playing his first match since beating Novak Djokovic for the bronze medal at the Olympics last Sunday, said he had no doubt he would be ready for the US Open, a title he won three years ago, later this month.

In other action, fourth seed Tomas Berdych avoided a scare by rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Julien Benneteau in a match that lasted just over three hours, while 15th seed Florian Mayer, of Germany, was beaten 6-3, 6-4 to Spain's Marcel Granollers.
