Actors James McAvoy and Katie Leung were officially crowned king and queen of style at a star-studded awards ceremony in Glasgow last night.

The glittering guest list at the Old Fruitmarket included Robert Carlyle, Amy McDonald, actors Laura Fraser, Kathleen McDermott and Allison McKenzie, broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli and his brother Sanjeev, designer Aimee McWilliams, A-list chef Mark Hix, and comic writer Grant Morrison.

Leung, just 20, is a Motherwell-born actor who has already achieved global fame and recognition through her big screen role as Harry Potter's love interest, Cho Chang.

Organisers said she has also been making fashion waves thanks to her youthful and quirky personal style, and she names favourite designers as Matthew Williamson and Ashley Isham but "she's also succumbed to the understated elegance of Chanel".

Under the criteria of "Scotswomen of renown, whose truly inspirational personal style is an important factor in their celebrity" she beat artist Kay Grossart, wife of Sir Angus Grossart, one of the mightiest figures in the Scottish business community.

Lady Grossart is a successful artist in her own right, who organisers said is "adored for her engaging personality, her wonderful sense of fun, but most particularly for her fabulous fashion taste and extraordinary personal style".

Leung also beat actor Laura Fraser, former Herald film critic Hannah McGill, who is now Edinburgh International Film Festival director, and Ugly Betty star Ashley Jenson.

McAvoy was said to be celebrated equally for his boyish good looks as for his acclaimed big-screen performances in movies such as Atonement and The Last King of Scotland.

The 28-year-old Scotstoun-born actor was praised for exhibiting an admirable sense of distinctive yet effortless style.

The organisers said "this tall, dark and handsome 24-year-old certainly knows his Prada from everyone else's Primark".

He beat Craig Gordon, the Scots goalkeeper who signed for Sunderland in a record deal. Actor Kevin McKidd, Mutley, the curator and cultural entrepreneur, and Grant Morrison, the comic book and screen writer, were also shortlisted.

It was the third year of the Scottish Style Awards.
