Senior council officials last night admitted trying to stop fans enjoying a pint before or during the game would be like telling them to "stop breathing". Greater Manchester Police promised a "relaxed and friendly policing style" in the build-up to the big match - as long as supporters did not try to take advantage of the soft touch.

Manchester banned public drinking as part of a zero- tolerance stand against antisocial behaviour. However, Vicky Rosin, assistant chief executive of Manchester City Council, said supporters of Rangers and their Russian opponents Zenit St Petersburg would be able to enjoy a drink "within reason".

Gerry Donnellan, the chief superintendent in charge of policing fans, said: "We will be taking a relaxed and friendly policing style next Wednesday.

"We would appreciate if that sort of style was reciprocated by the fans.

"I won't be telling them not to drink."
