The Go of the title is an ancient oriental board game and Wu Qingyuan, played here by Chen Chang, its real-life master. The glacial pace of this biopic by the director of The Blue Kite contrasts with the turbulent times through which Qingyuan has lived. Born in China, his gift was spotted at a young age and he was sent to Japan. There, while trying to dedicate himself to the game and his faith, war, political upheaval and his own uncompromising standards frequently exacted their toll. A handsomely shot piece, but with Go itself never explained, it's tough going trying to engage with either the subject or its master.
