Karen Ritchie, a classroom assistant, hopes the findings of the report will help people realise her job involves more than "just putting pictures on walls and cleaning paint pots".

Mrs Ritchie, 39, who has worked at St John's Primary in Barrhead near Glasgow as an assistant for more than six years, said: "People can have images of the job, but it is very much a difficult job with low pay."

The mother-of-two from Paisley typically works a 25-hour week for £9460 a year - the highest salary she can expect to earn in the post. She added: "I work with kids who can have ADHD, dyslexia, social and emotional problems, as well as more able kids. It can be exhausting, especially if I'm working on a one-to-one basis. There isn't a moment in the day when I'm not busy."
