News of ATH's latest travails follows The Herald's revelation earlier this week that production and sales at arch-rival Scottish Coal had been hit by wet winter weather.
After ATH warned its problems will "result in the trading performance for the full year being substantially below expectations", its shares plunged as much as 42.5%.
The stock regained some poise but still recorded an all-time closing low of 16.5p, after shedding 4.88p, or 22.8%.
This valued the company at just £6.6m.
