They were hated by housewives in the 1950s. Now ID cards are coming back... and so are the protests, writes David Leask.

THE last battle with ID cards began half a century ago, on a very wet Saturday in April 1951. Four women - all officers of the British Housewives' League - stood outside the Houses of Parliament and tried to burn their hated papers.
