The family-run office furniture retail company, Saxen Ltd was established in 2007 after Shirley Wallace's employers went into liquidation.

Shirley's fiancé Gareth Gillespie helped her build a website and the Saxen online store began selling office furniture from their spare bedroom in Newmilns, Ayrshire.

Saxen outgrew the spare bedroom and a small industrial unit was purchased in the next village. In 2012, Saxen moved again. Since late 2012, they have been located in a former lace mill a mere half-mile from their humble beginnings!

In the last 10-15 years, many mills have been destroyed to make way for new housing estates. Riverbank Mill was an opportunity to bring an old disused building back to life! As the building was falling into disrepair it was the perfect choice to help sustain local industry and economy.

Having previously been a lace mill, Riverbank Mill was an open plan industrial space. Sand blasting brickwork removed a century of grime revealing original walls. Choosing glass partitions to create individual office spaces provided the required privacy, retained the open-plan feel and enabled the display of feature brickwork.

Old photographs from days gone by adorn the walls. The entrance and reception area boasts a 9-piece artwork of an old weaving loom.  The photos ensure the original use and history of the many weavers, darners and textile workers of Riverbank Mill lives on.

The result of the lace mill restoration is a stunning 7,000 sq ft office furniture showroom. The showroom officially opened in January 2013. More recently a section dedicated for the non-business, home office consumer has been opened as featured in the Business Herald December 10 2013.

The showroom now houses a huge selection for the commercial and home office consumer and hospitality sector. With over 30 desks and 50 chairs, bistro and bar furniture on display and prices to suit all budgets.

A free space planning service allows customers to design the entire space without leaving the showroom. Colour samples for wood and fabric finishes are available for customers to browse while relaxing with a coffee. Nothing need be left to the imagination. The ever-resourceful Saxen Team also have a range of carpet tile samples.

A variety of ergonomic desk accessories are on display for visitors to try. These include tablet and laptop stands, ergonomic keyboards and mice, monitor arms and footrests and ergonomic specialist seating.

An ergonomic advisor can visit your premises and carry out free onsite ergonomic assessments if required. Advice on choosing a suitable office chair and correct chair adjustment is available within the showroom.

Saxen strives to offer quality office furniture products for the workplace including desks made from FSC Timber, products which have British Standard certification, and manufacturers who hold the ISO 9001/14001 quality/ environmental standards or equivalent European certifications.
