Curtain up on season ahead for BBC SSO
The audience at tonight's Glasgow City Halls concert by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra will here more than the music of Ives and Gershwin, as they will also be the first to see the shape of the forthcoming season when the SSO becomes the first Scottish orchestra to reveal its 2014/15 plans. The programme includes 60th birthday concerts for chief conductor Donald Runnicles, featuring Beethoven's 9th Symphony, including one in the city of his birth, Edinburgh, on the very day. November 16.
Other highlights include a focus on the symphonies of Shostakovich, with Runnicles conducting Nos 10 and 15 at the start and end of the season and tonight's conductor, Martyn Brabbins, conducting No 5 in November. That concert also features the start of a cycle of all three of James MacMillan's Piano Concertos with Peter Donohoe, beginning with the most recent.
The SSO will also be exploring the connections between classical music and the plays of Shakespeare over the season and there will be a semi-staged performed of Berg's opera Wozzeck at the City Halls in October, with Runnicles conducting. In May next year at the Usher Hall, the orchestra will accompany finalists in the BBC Young Musician title, a decade on from Nicola Benedetti's victory in the competition in the same venue.

Haiti earthquake inspires poetry
A project featuring Haitian poet and artist Franketienne and Glaswegian guitarist, singer and songwriter Mark Mulholland has its Scottish premiere at Alliance Francaise in Glasgow on Friday. Chaophonies de Port-au-Prince promises a dramatic reading of Franketienne's poetic responses to the goudou goudou - the Haitian name for the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010, accompanied by original music composed by the now Haiti-based Mulholland. As well as conveying the resulting chaos, Chaophonies presents a vision of Haiti's emergence from the disaster in words, images, sounds and more. Entrance is free but spaces are limited so booking is essential.

Robb to unveil choral piece
Perthshire-based composer Graham Robb has announced the world premiere broadcast of a new choral piece, along the brittle treacherous bright street.
Part of Robb's song cycle based on the works of American poet ee cummings, Songs of War, Life & Love, the piece will be performed by Pitlochry and District Choral Society on BBC Radio 3 this Sunday afternoon. The full song cycle will be performed at Pitlochry Parish Church on Sunday April 13. Robb is currently working on an opera commission from Carnegie Hall, New York, having impressed music programmers at the iconic venue with his Flora and the Prince opera short last year.
