Strathaven Choral Society is the sole Scottish ensemble among the partnerships announced in the Adopt a Composer scheme.

The project is run by voluntary music-making and promoting organisation Making Music and new music agency Sound and Music with BBC Radio 3 and funding from the PRS Foundation, and teams music groups with composers at the start of their careers, who then work together to produce a bespoke new piece, the performance of which is recorded and broadcast.

The Strathaven choir has been teamed with Mark Carroll, who is from Newcastle and will start working with the singers next month, making a series of visits before he produces a work that will be performed in St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow's west end in June of next year. The relationship will be mentored by Scots composer and teacher at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music, David Horne, above.

Whellans for Star club

Borders-based one-man-blues-band Mike Whellans is among the attractions lined up for the Star Folk Club in Glasgow during October.

Whellans, who once worked in a popular duo with fiddler Aly Bain and was an early member of Boys of the Lough, follows in the tradition of blues greats Dr Ross, Jesse "San Francisco Bay Blues" Fuller and the other Tony Bennett, better known as Duster, who all sang and played guitar, harmonica and drums. He appears on Tuesday 14.

Also guesting at the club, which meets in the Admiral Bar in Waterloo Street, are traditional and contemporary folk singer Bram Taylor (Tuesday 7), Philadelphian singer-songwriter and favourite of BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris, Lizanne Knott (Tuesday 21), and leading Canadian singer-songwriter James Keelaghan (Tuesday 28).

Your chance to blow a sax

The famous Belgian inventor of the saxophone Adolphe Sax was born 200 years ago on November 6 this year, and that anniversary will be marked in Glasgow with a lecture-recital by saxophonist Richard Ingham in the company of the Auricle Ensemble at St Bride's in Hyndland Road.

The programme runs from 5pm with discovery sessions where all-comers will be able to get their hands on a horn, and continues with a masterclass and a performance of Darius Milhaud's La creation du monde before Ingham takes to the podium. He says: "This is a great opportunity to play the saxophone, hear the saxophone, and celebrate Adolphe Sax at 200."

For an hour from 9pm, the sax action moves to the depths of the church for Jazz in the Crypt. Tickets for the full five-hour extravaganza are just £8, with £5 concessions.
