A forgotten screenplay by late Scottish director Alexander Mackendrick is set to feature on Radio 4 series Unmade Movies.

The filmmaker, who directed Whisky Galore! and The Ladykillers, spent years trying to make Mary, Queen of Scots in the fifties and sixties without success.

However, the script will now be heard for the first time next month, with actress Glenda Jackson as narrator and Ellie Bamber playing the lead.

Speaking about her role, Ms Jackson said radio was favourite medium, but added: “I very rarely get offered anything that requires a camera now, be it television or film.”

The Unmade Movies episode featuring Mackendrick’s script will air on December 8 at 2.30pm.
