Platform Fire
EXPERIMENTAL Nordic supergroup Fire! are set to appear in Glasgow this weekend.
Made up of core trio Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin, the “no-holds-barred” band have ignored tradition and adopted fresh approaches in improvised music. “Fire! are influenced equally by garage punk, free jazz, electro acoustics and the noise of heavy industry,” said a spokesman.
Which heavy industry has helped inform the band isn’t mentioned but you can only assume Norwegian industrial noise to be far more melodic than our own.
Fire!’s latest album The Hands was released in January 2018 and is said to display “a captivating mix of heavy, dark and intensely burning music.”
Fire! are supported by bell lungs, a musician who also takes the less worn road and is equally colourfully described as someone who “weaves sonic tapestries, fusing noise and omnichord drones, delve into a sea of homemade electronics, harmonies, mellotron violin swirls, hill singing and trippy pop ambience.”

Edinburgh Sex Clinic
STAR of Channel 4’s The Sex Clinic, Artist In Residence Bryony Kimmings, is set to appear at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with her critically acclaimed show I’m a Phoenix, Bitch.
I’m a Phoenix, Bitch combines personal stories with epic film, soundscapes and ethereal music to create a powerful, dark and joyful work about “motherhood, heartbreak and finding inner strength.”
Kimmings recent work includes co-writing the screenplay for 2019 film Last Christmas with Oscar winning actress Emma Thompson, starring Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame, and developing the musical A Pacifists Guide to the War on Cancer with the National Theatre.
Kimmings says; “My shows are usually born out of me going ‘We don’t talk about this enough, this is problematic in terms of a political or feminist narrative.’
“My hope with this show is to give the almost unspeakable traumas associated with postnatal depression and an ill child a voice. I wanted to create a show that cuts to the heart of these things but does it in a way that people can relate to.”
I’m A Pheonix, Bitch runs at the Fringe from July 31 to August 25.
Taking Liberties
“HIGHLY provocative” comedian Geoff Norfolk (to set him apart from all the other stand-ups who are simply provocative) is touring again, this time with his Taking Liberties show. Norfolk is said to be beyond left/right party politics and Brexit, a comic who has realised the main thing that motivates his political persuasion is that he hates being told what to do.
“Whether it’s Eurocrats, ministers, cultural icons or his wife of 15 years, Geoff just can’t stand anyone having power over him. But it’s a bad time to feel this way.”
The spokesperson added; “With rising ‘Nanny State’ legislation coming from a supposedly right-wing government and ever greater controls on food, lifestyle and language choices, Taking Liberties is both a statement on what Geoff fears is happening and his intent to playfully push the envelope.”

One nighter
Turner Prize-winning artist Charlotte Prodger’s new commissioned film for Scotland + Venice is set to tour Scotland at the same time as being presented in Venice Biennale.
“This new work builds upon Prodger’s sustained exploration of subjectivity, self-determination, and queerness,” said a spokesperson.
