Our new favourite … Boxset

What’s it called?

The Lawyer or, to give it its Scandinavian title, Advokaten.

What’s it about?

The short answer: it’s about a lawyer in Sweden. The longer answer: it’s about a 20-year-old cold case involving the mysterious death of a couple in a car bomb which was witnessed by their daughter Sara, now a policewoman in Malmo, and their adopted son Frank, now a high-flying defence lawyer. Neither child has ever forgotten the trauma of seeing their parents killed but each deals with it in a different way – Frank by taking to the boxing ring either to be beaten senseless or inflict as much damage as possible on his opponent, Sara by smoking heroin confiscated from drug dealers. But Sara also obsesses about the crime that killed her parents and it’s when she finally tracks down a positive lead that the action kicks in and brother and sister embark on a dangerous journey into the Danish and Swedish underworlds. Is there any other kind?

Who’s in it?

Alexander Karim and Malin Buska play Frank and Sara but fans of Scandi Noir may be more excited by the appearance of Follow The Money’s Thomas Bo Larsen as underworld kingpin Thomas Waldman and Bjarne Henriksen (Theis Birk Larsen in the first series of The Killing) as his friend Jarnu, a corrupt cop.

Best bits so far?

Frank’s knee-trembler with a married colleague in an empty office took this viewer by surprise and certainly upped the sizzle factor.

Where can I find it?

The series is available to stream on Channel 4’s video-on-demand service All 4.

Fun fact …

Writer Hans Rosenfeldt is also the man responsible for The Bridge and the ITV/Netflix series Marcella.
