What’s it about?
The zombie apocalypse, as seen through the eyes of high school student Josh Wheeler. When not breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the audience or walking us through flashbacks he wanders the ruins of his suburban Californian home armed with a samurai sword on a quest to find his girlfriend Sam. Mostly he just encounters fellow survivors such as 10-year-old pyromaniac Angelica or jock-turned-street samurai Wesley, or the multiple gangs which now run the neighbourhood – gangs made up entirely of his former classmates, this particular zombie apocalypse having left teenagers apparently untouched.
Who’s in it?
Colin Ford is Josh, British newcomer Sophie Simnet plays Sam, Alyvia Alyn Lind is Angelica and Wesley is played by Austin Crute. The heavy-hitter in the cast (this is a Netflix series, so you know there’s going to be at least one) is Matthew Broderick, who plays school principal Michael Burr.
What’s so good about it?
Did I mention it’s a comedy? Based on Brian Ralph’s 2011 graphic novel of the same name its pleasingly wry and drops fond references to everything from Game Of Thrones to Akira Kurosawa’s 1957 film Throne Of Blood. A very post-modern take on the zombie apocalypse, though nobody could claim it was deep.

Veteran rapper RZA, leader of New York’s Wu-Tang Clan and composer of the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s samurai-flavoured Kill Bill films, features in one episode.
