What is the book about?
Dork Diaries is the very first book in a series of 20 books all set in the same world that has been running since 2009. It’s a series that I grew up with and thought it was time they were introduced to a new generation. It follows the story of Nikki Maxwell, a teenager who is new to her school and the relatable problems and experiences she has along the way. It focuses mainly on the themes of friendship and self- acceptance.
Who is it aimed at?
This series is definitely aimed at slightly younger people and I would definitely recommend it from anyone between the ages of around eleven to fifteen.
What was your favourite part?
My favourite part about reading Dork Diaries is just how easy Rachel Renée Russell’s work is to read. Her writing style is light, bubbly and effortlessly hilarious in a way that makes her books impossible to put down until they’re finished. I find there to be something incredibly comforting about going back to a book like that and re-reading it.
What was your least favourite part?
With the Dork Diaries series, it’s only really to be read when you’re in the mood for something easy. There’s a lack of emotional depth and more complex plotting that I often find myself in a mood for.
Which character would you most like to meet?
As in a lot of books, I have the most interest in the character that is framed to be the antagonist. Mackenzie is Nikki’s bully throughout the book and the driving force in most issues and key plot points she faces and is the kind of character that makes you want to know more about her motivations.
Why should someone buy this book?
This book series has a sort of nostalgia for me, growing up and reading each book as it come out, and I would love to bring that to a new group of young people.
