What is it?

A crime thriller set in the fictitious Scottish Institute of Forensic Science and Anatomy (SIFA) located at the equally fictitious University of Tayside – but based, presumably, on Dundee University’s renowned Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification. The story finds lab assistant Emma Hedges arriving in Dundee to take up a new job under the wing of high-flying SIFA professor Sarah Gordon, but soon being thrown into a mystery surrounding a deadly fire in a nightclub, and a slew of bad memories regarding a victim much closer to her heart – her mother Marie, murdered in Dundee in 2001. Tellingly – cue drum roll – the killer was never caught.

Who’s in it?

BAFTA Award-winning Molly Windsor is Emma Hedges, Laura Fraser is Professor Sarah Gordon and as if that wasn’t stellar enough in the way of cast, Martin Compston and John Gordon Sinclair also appear. The six-part thriller is written by actress Amelia Bullmore, is based on an original idea by none other than Val McDermid and, although it’s still screening weekly on crime channel Alibi, all six episodes are now available as a boxset on Sky Boxsets.

Best line …

“Cake is pivotal here,” said by Fraser’s Professor Gordon. Fleabag, eat your heart out.

What’s so good about it?

The script’s great (see above), it’s refreshing to see something set in the City of Discovery and the regular aerial shots of the Tay, the Law and the V&A will have the folk in the tourist office weeping tears of joy into their Dundee Cake
