Robert Burns Selected Poems Penguin Classics

What is the book about?

This book is a selection of some of the most well-known works by the classic poet and lyricist Robert Burns.

It is a compact and helpful collection of poems and songs that can be intimidating when studied individually, but are made much easier to enjoy when put together.

It provides the reader with, not an overwhelming book of complete works, but rather a selection of those that are most important to know, whether for personal study or education.

Who is it aimed at?

From the contents of Burns’ works, it would be better understood by someone over the ages of 13 or 14 and most useful to those in high school, university or college but could it be enjoyed by anyone.

What is your favourite part?

Of the works contained in this book, by far my favourite was the classic tale of Tam O’ Shanter. Though it is always difficult to choose a favourite of wonderful things, the mystical and bright telling of this story has never yet failed to engage me.

What was your least favourite part?

Though I deeply enjoyed the experience of reading this, I found the order of the works a little puzzling and would have loved to see a little more structure to where the songs and poems were placed in relation to each other.

Which character would you most like to meet?

Though there aren’t many ‘characters’ of such depicted in the book I often think about sitting down with Robert Burns and talking to him about his inspirations and ideas.

I’d also be interested to hear his thoughts on just how deeply engrained his work is in Scottish history.

Why should someone buy this book?

Not only would this book make an excellent gift, it’s also endlessly helpful in the endeavour of studying Robert Burns and in getting an overview of some of his most influential work.
