Set in the placid Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio, during the 1990s, Witherspoon plays Elena Richardson, a local newspaper reporter and regimented mother to four children, with Washington as free-spirited artist Mia Warren, who is bringing up her teenage daughter Pearl alone.

As the lives of the two families become ever more intertwined, things begin to take a darker turn.

Sum it up in five words.

Secrets. Race. Belonging. Motherhood. Danger.

Anything else?

The book was discovered by Witherspoon prior to its publication in 2017. She has a good eye for stories that can make the leap to screen having previously produced Oscar-nominated films Gone Girl and Wild, as well as the hit TV show Big Little Lies.
