Jess Thorpe, Co-Artistic Director at Glas(s) Performance answrs our questions.
- What is your Fringe show about?
OLD BOY is a show about grandfathers and grandsons. It features a two-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man all performing with their granddads. It is about love and legacy and the things that men mean to each other in families.
- How many times/many years have you appeared at the Fringe?
As a company been to the fringe twice three times before with our collective of young performers Junction 25. Then once with a show I did with my Dad at Forest Fringe and the last time we came with a production we did with the Roundhouse called The Happiness Project in 2015.
- What’s your most memorable moment from the Fringe?
I have so many! Probably staying in flat with the whole of Junction 25 and singing kareoke into the early hours after we’d found out we won a Herald Angel Award.
- What’s the worst thing about the Fringe?
Being late for a show and trying to make your way up the Royal Mile.
- If you were not a performer what would you be doing?
I’m a director so I am really behind the scenes supporting the performers. If I wasn’t working in theatre I would have loved to have been a social worker. I like people and have always thought that was a meaningful job.
- How do you prepare for a performance?
As a company we generally dance together to loud music before each performance. It gives us all energy and makes us happy.
- Favourite thing about being in Edinburgh?
The many different people that come from all over the world. I live in Scotland and work in theatre all year round and it’s exciting when August hits and the visitors start to arrive. The energy of the city is amazing.
- What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve ever done?
I have lived in Scotland for 18 years now and I’ve been to a lot of parties. I would say in this time I have become pretty good at stripping the willow.
- Favourite Scottish food/drink?
Tunnocks Caramel Wafer. Every time. Best served with a cup of tea.

Show summary
Do you remember when we used to go camping? And when you helped me make an ATM out of cardboard for my school project? Do you realise what a big impact you’ve had on who I am? From the producers of Junction 25 comes a brand-new show about the unique bond between real-life grandfathers and grandsons that explores male family relationships and the legacy that is passed down through generations.
