The wonderful book The Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, is here mounted as exhibition, a lavishly illustrated meditation on the wonders of nature and the words which have been excised from the dictionary. This exhibition in the Botanic’s beautiful Inverleith House may well inspire your children – particularly if you read out Macfarlane’s “spells” – but it could do with more thought and context, not least with the gallery blinds shutting out the gardens beyond. And it’s hard to view in this space, so recently an internationally renowned contemporary art gallery, without thinking of what else has been lost.
