Power 1 Group, a Paisley-based electrical and communications specialist, has secured a £9million order to upgrade street lighting in north-east England.

The two-year contract to carry out the installation of 46,000 LED luminaires for main contractor GallifordTry builds upon the successful installation of 22,000 luminaires in Salford, Greater Manchester which was the first retrofit project of its kind in the UK. That £1.5m contract was awarded in 2012 and ends next month.

Mark Ward, managing director, said the award validated the group's hard work and investment over the last eight years to create a sustainable company. " It enables us to secure and create local jobs and gives something back to the communities we serve. We have a strong track record in the street lighting sector and look forward to using our skills and experience on such an exciting and challenging project."

Mr Ward says Power 1's innovation and efficiencies can help to reduce dramatically both energy bills and carbon footprint for hard-pressed local authorities, whilst maintaining or improving upon current services. The Northumberland contract includes upgrading bollards and replacing sodium lanterns.

Power 1 was founded in 2004 and has grown to serve the communications sector, updating infrastructure for providers including Vodafone and T-Mobile, as well as providing equipment for Vodafone at events such as Wimbledon and Glastonbury. It employs 45 and recent accreditation as an Independent Connection Provider has given the group the ability to provide a 'one stop shop' to clients.

In 2010 it expanded into the oil and gas sector, completing an oil rig project in Norway and winning a contract offshore Venezuela.
