OCEAN Terminal, the Leith-based shopping and leisure mall, has been earmarked for a £6 million investment by owner Resolution Property.

More than 70 construction jobs are expected to be created by the work, which will involve the refurbishment of the atrium, addition of waterfront space, and creation of further retail accommodation.

Resolution also has plans for residential and hotel development at the site in the long term.

Details of the expansion emerged as fashion retailer H&M signed a lease for a new 22,000 square foot store at the centre, allowing it to offer a wider selection than its existing Ocean Terminal shop. The retailer is expected to begin trading at its new unit in the autumn.

The move by H&M comes after Limited Edition, the first pop-up department store for Scottish brands, opened in Ocean Terminal last year, and the arrival of three Scottish independent street-foot outlets - Mr Nicks, Taco Mazama and El Falafel - at the centre.

Subjit Jassy of Resolution Property said: "At Ocean Terminal we're working to create a retail, leisure and cultural destination which is unique to Edinburgh and Scotland.

"By combining major brands with exciting new pop-ups, food outlets and artists, we're shaking up the mix and creating an experience you won't find at other centres. Our significant investment in improving the retail and public realm will enhance the experience and stimulate the local economy."

Ocean Terminal is believed to attract five million visitors a year, generating an above average spend of £50 per person. It is home to the Royal Yacht Britannia, which attracts 350,000 visitors a year.
