Scotland’s two largest airports have continued their recent strong growth with further increases in domestic and international traffic.

Glasgow Airport is on course to record its busiest year since 2008 after reporting a 7.7 per cent rise in passenger numbers to 618,583 during November.

That came as Edinburgh Airport said it has experienced the busiest November for any Scottish airport with more than 794,000 passengers, a 12.4 per cent rise on the previous year.

At Glasgow international traffic was up 12.2 per cent with popular new services including Wizz Air flights to Budapest, Vilnius and Lublin along with a Ryanair link to Berlin.

Increased capacity on easyJet’s London routes helped to bolster domestic traffic by 4.5 per cent.

Amanda McMillan, managing director, said: “2015 has been a fantastic year in terms of passenger growth. Our November figures not only guarantee we will end the year on a high, they will ensure we are in a strong position as we prepare to enter 2016, the airport’s 50th anniversary year.”

At the Scottish capital’s airport international traffic was up a bumper 22.5 per cent.

Along with Ryanair and easyJet routes in Europe the airport said it had seen strong performance from Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines as well as the increased services on Qatar Airways flights to Doha.

Domestic traffic grew 5.2 per cent in the month.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive, said: “These exceptionally strong figures represent our busiest ever November; Edinburgh Airport has experienced passenger numbers levels in November– a quiet month in air travel – on a par with what many other regional airports do at the peak of summer.”
